Rust to Relief

Repairing cars, restoring hope

About Us

Rust to Relief is a small, volunteer-driven charity turning overlooked vehicles into lifelines. We source affordable and often damaged cars across the UK—sometimes funded from our own pockets, sometimes through donations, and sometimes generously given to us outright. With the help of our trusted mechanic in England, we repair and prepare each vehicle for a far more important journey.Once ready, we drive these cars thousands of miles to eastern Ukraine, where they are donated to humanitarian organisations and units on the ground who rely on mobility to do their work—delivering aid, evacuating civilians, and supporting communities under constant strain. Our team is made up entirely of volunteers, united by a simple belief: something written off by one person can be invaluable to another. Among us are people who have spent extended time in Ukraine, including over a year volunteering directly in affected areas. That experience shapes everything we do—from the types of vehicles we prepare to the partners we support—ensuring our efforts are practical, relevant, and genuinely useful. We’re not a large organisation. We don’t have layers of administration. What we do have is commitment, resourcefulness, and a willingness to get our hands dirty—buying, fixing, and delivering vehicles where they’re needed most.Recovering Cars. Our Work

At Rust to Relief, our work is simple in principle but demanding in practice: we find vehicles others have written off, bring them back to life, and drive them directly to the people who need them most in eastern Ukraine. We source cars across the UK through word of mouth and online listings. Most aren’t in good shape when we find them—rust, failed clutches, gearbox issues, electrical faults, and all kinds of mechanical problems are common. But we don’t see these as scrap. So far, we haven’t found a vehicle that isn’t worth saving. Each car is repaired and prepared in England with the help of our mechanic, focusing on reliability and practicality. These aren’t showroom vehicles—they’re built to work, to endure rough conditions, and to keep moving when it matters.Once ready, the journey begins. We drive the vehicles out of England heading east across Europe. Along the way, volunteer drivers help move the cars toward Poland before returning home. From there, selected members of our team—including the charity’s founder—take the vehicles across the border into Ukraine. We don’t hand vehicles off at the edge. We drive them deep into the eastern regions, delivering them in person to the people using them on the ground—humanitarian organisations, NGOs, and military units. These vehicles are used to transport supplies, support operations, and, in many cases, save lives. To date, we have delivered multiple vehicles and over £50,000 worth of combined aid into Ukraine. Each vehicle costs roughly £2,000–£2,500 to source, repair, and deliver—making this one of the most direct and cost-effective ways to provide meaningful support where it’s urgently needed. We currently run missions every four months, entirely dependent on available funding. With more support, we can move faster, deliver more vehicles, and reach more people. We don’t send money. We deliver outcomes. Vehicles are expensive and difficult to source locally in Ukraine, but by finding and restoring them in the UK, we can stretch every donation further and ensure exactly what’s needed arrives where it should.Everything we do is visible. You can follow each vehicle’s journey—from purchase to repair to final delivery—through our Instagram, so you can see exactly where your support goes. This is hands-on, ground-level work. No middlemen, no excess—just people, vehicles, and a clear purpose.
